Mathematics

I am passionate about teaching and absolutely love mathematics. Having graduated in 2007 with a BSc I feel confident in tutoring both KS3 and KS4 mathematics. I have worked alongside the Edexcel exam board but feel confident to teach other exam boards. I am passionate about building strong relationships with my students, tailoring all lessons to individual students and seeing them grow in their mathematics knowledge.

Overview

Confidence is key to learning mathematics and so I will often go back to basics with students in order to ensure that the foundations are solid before I begin to build upon them. Building a good working relationship with students is key – a tutor needs to be trusted as well as respected. I aim for students to be confident and happy enough to say ‘I don’t understand’ or ‘can you go over that again’ which they often don’t feel confident enough to do in a classroom setting with 30 other students.

Having been Head of KS4 Mathematics I am confident in teaching exam techniques and believe that exposure to the exam paper is the best form of revision for a student. I am happy to provide feedback at regular intervals and usually provide homework/independent work to support the current learning although it is up to the student whether they choose to complete it or not. I am happy to communicate directly with students although would never do so without copying in the responsible adult.

“My son really struggles with school work in general and can certainly be described as a “reluctant learner” but Jo is patient and teaches him in a way he can follow and understand.”

“My daughter really struggled with Maths, Jo was a massive help in explaining things meaning my daughter passed her GCSE which she wouldn’t have done without Jo’s help.”
